Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between Documentary Screening!
Join us on Saturday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m., when The Showroom Cinema in Asbury Park becomes the stage for a soul-stirring ride through music, race, rebellion, and resilience. Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between—winner of the DOC NYC 2023 Audience Award—dives deep into the life and legacy of the legendary, genre-defying singer-songwriter. The film is a raw, loving chronicle of an artist who stayed true to his voice, even when the world wasn’t ready to hear it.
Join Director Claire Jeffreys for a post-screening Q&A, moderated by singer-songwriter James Maddock.

Hubris, anger, prejudice...doo-wop, reggae, rock… expectations, heartbreak, transformation… Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between examines the fifty-year career of this genre-bending, biracial singer-songwriter. An enigmatic performer since his start in the Greenwich Village clubs, Jeffreys never quite reached the success predicted for him. The film asks why, and explores how his commitment to writing about race in America is more relevant now than ever. Sadly, since beginning the film, Garland has been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and is now in the final stages. This truly makes the film stand as his legacy.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
A first-time director, Claire Jeffreys wrote and produced three music videos for Garland Jeffreys. Her initial goals were to have a larger audience come to appreciate him as his devoted fans already do, and to bring his body of work the recognition she’d long believed it deserved. It is her hope that people will come away with a respect not only for Garland's hard-won success, but with a desire to embrace their own levels of achievement in any sphere, not just as artists, but as human beings.
“I've been Garland’s partner for more than 40 years. Many fans and friends have told me about turning people on to his music—and can't believe they’ve never heard of him. I decided to make this film not only to bring Garland to a wider audience, but also because it seems the world has finally caught up to his commitment to examining issues of race and social justice in his songs. He belongs in the conversation. His perseverance will inspire people everywhere.”
